Sclerotherapy
PREPARATION / PROCEDURE / RECOVERY / RESULTS
Spider veins, found most commonly on the legs, can easily be eliminated
with sclerotherapy. Spider veins are those tiny purple and
red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs and lower legs. They
are hereditary and can form anywhere on the leg.
| Preparation |
 |
Please bring a pair of shorts to wear during your procedure. No aspirin,
ibuprofen, or blood thinners 1-2 weeks prior to appointment. No alcohol
prior to treatment. Avoid sun exposure 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Do not shave legs day of procedure to avoid irritation.
| Procedure |
 |
During the procedure, a special sclerosing solution is injected into
the veins with a micro-needle. The tiny needle generally causes very
little if any pain. The sclerosing solution
causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually disappear. Treatment
generally is scheduled to last 30-60 minutes.
| Recovery |
 |
You may be asked to wear special heavy-duty stockings or ace wraps to help keep pressure on the veins. This will reduce bruising and help keep the treated veins closed. Bruises around the treated areas usually disappear after the first week. Patients are encouraged to take it easy for the rest of the day. Refrain from vigorous activity for the first 24 hours, although walking is encouraged. Sun exposure should be avoided for 2 weeks.

More than treatment may be required, 6-8 weeks later. In most cases, about 50-70% of the treated vessels will be gone for good.
